Excerpt from Chapter 3: Saving Graces

Caroline always smiled as a baby, never fussy.  Still she was disconnected.  Ann recalled taking her in for a hearing test at six months old.  Caroline would sit in her crib for hours and just stare at the ceiling and smile.  Ann would drop things, come in singing making all sorts of noises.  Caroline wouldn’t budge.  Ann thought for sure that there was something wrong with her baby’s hearing.  She would turn on the radio, no response.  She would turn up the TV, no response.  She decided it was time to find out what was wrong with her new baby.
Kevin and Ann dressed the baby and strapped her into the family station wagon headed to the Cleveland Clinic Ear, Nose and Throat specialist for testing.  It was a quiet ride.  Neither party wanted to discuss the what-ifs.   Finally they arrive, check in at the front desk take a seat in the waiting room and patiently wait to be called.
Kevin looks around at all the other babies and children in the waiting room.  Some of the toddler age children are shy and clinging to their parents, others are playing with children they just met today.  But all have a glow of innocence in their eyes.  He then pulls the blanket off of his six month old daughter.  He is startled to see that she is still staring at the ceiling and smiling.  His first thought is of Ann’s mother Alicia.
Kevin remembers her trying to convince Ann and him to abort.  Ann’s mother was going on an on about a family curse and the seventh female child born.  It was as though Alicia was having an outer body experience.  She was speaking out loud to no one in particular.  Saying “the seventh girl child in the family should not live, Grandma Emma was touched by the devil all those years ago, the child will be the devil reincarnated, we have to pray, we have to pray, pray for forgiveness, get rid of it, pray for forgiveness...” or something outrageous like that, he couldn’t quite remember the exact words.  He did remember snatching his son and wife and running the hell out of the Brooks household promising to never return in no uncertain terms.
Ann is bargaining with God while they are waiting to be called.  “God you gave me a great Dad, a great husband and the beginnings of two great children.  I know you had your reasons for giving Caroline to me.  I live my life by your rules.  I even honor thy mother as you tell me to despite all the things that have happened.  Please God, don’t let my baby be my mother’s seventh child.  I will continue to serve to the best of my ability.   I know I fall short at times but Lord you know I’m trying.  I know you will not put more on my shoulders than I can bear but I need to ask rather it be thy will that my child is normal and happy”.  Ann then turns to Kevin.  He holds his hand up and says “it happened six months ago and I told you then I don’t ever want the subject brought up again.  You deal with your mother on your own terms.  I told you then the woman is the devil”.  He exits the waiting room abruptly and goes for a smoke.
Finally the Grover baby was called after about a half hour wait.  Ann studies the expression on the doctor’s face.  She can’t quite determine if it is going to be good news.  “Mr. and Mrs. Grover, are you God fearing citizens of the state of Ohio”, the doctor begins.  Both parents looked at each other and then back at the doctor.
